Clergy Robes

The church clergy has appointed the clergy robes as official apparel for members of the church. However, the style and design for each robe can vary depending on the denomination or church using it.

Catholic Clergy Robes

For example, in the Catholic Church, the bishop or any member of the clergy that are part of the higher order usually has to wear robe that bears a special insignia.

Some other examples of the insignia used by the church include the gloves; these were put into use during the 12th century. Most of these gloves were red or white in color and made from silk.

Another necessary insignia that clergy members from the Catholic Church might have is the rational. This shoulder cloth is created from various materials and serves to distinguish a prominent individual in the church.

Compared to the church robe that most Christian groups wear, the Syrian Orthodox Church dons a different kind of robe altogether. A different kind of robe is also worn depending on the occasion that's celebrated.

For instance, a priest for the Syrian Orthodox Church wears a black robe for his day to day activities. The bishops wear a red and black robe along with a characteristic red belt.

The kind of business the clergyman has in a particular place or church also affects the type of robes and accessories that will be included.

When picking out proper clergy robes, make sure that you pick the right one for your church and denomination.

  1. My son needs a new confirmation/altar robe for his upcoming confirmation. It is a very important day for him so he needs to wear something special.
